(1996/Delmark) Delmark has been great about documenting Chicago-based musicians who are respected locally, but little known outside of the Windy City. A good example is Rich Corpolongo, who had been playing post-bop and avant-garde jazz around Chicago for decades when, in 1995, Delmark finally gave him a chance to record as an leader. The reedman sticks to his own compositions on his debut album, Just Found Joy, a varied effort that finds him joined by Chicagoans Larry Luchowski (piano), Eric Hochberg (acoustic and electric bass), and Mike Raynor (drums, percussion). Corpolongo´s pieces range from difficult, abstract numbers like ´Try To, If You Can´ and ´Time Impulse´ to the smoky, dusky ´Hey, What´s Happening,´ the congenial ´La Blues,´ and the impressionistic ´Valse.´ Corpolongo is heard on the alto and soprano sax as well as the clarinet, and he sees to it that this decent, if imperfect, debut is far from predictable. It´s regrettable that the Chicagoan waited so long to record as a leader. (AllMusic)
´The Curious Case of Benjamin Button´ sees a baby born in 1860 begin life as an old man and then age backwards. F. Scott Fitzgerald hinted at this kind of inversion when he called his era ´a generation grown up to find all Gods dead, all wars fought, all faiths in man shaken´. Perhaps nowhere in American fiction has this ´Lost Generation´ been more vividly preserved than in Fitzgerald´s short fiction. Spanning the early twentieth-century American landscape, this collection captures, with Fitzgerald´s signature blend of enchantment and disillusionment, America during the Jazz Age.
Simon Templar heads to New York - to sip cocktails, listen to jazz, and have a good time. But he has a way of making enemies, and a quiet night in Cookie´s Cellar sets him on a trail involving drugs, smuggling, dead bodies, a beautiful singer called Avalon Dexter, and finally the loathsome Cookie herself. The battle is on. Leslie Charteris was born in Singapore and moved to England in 1919. He left Cambridge University early when his first novel was accepted for publication. The best-selling author of The Martian returns with an irresistible new near-future thriller - a heist story set on the moon. Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you´re not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you´ve got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down. But pulling off the impossible is just the start of her problems, as she learns that she´s stepped square into a conspiracy for control of Artemis itself - and that now her only chance at survival lies in a gambit even riskier than the first. Bringing to life Weir´s brash, whip-smart protagonist is actress Rosario Dawson (Marvel´s The Defenders, Sin City, Death Proof). With the breathless immediacy of one realizing they´re one cracked helmet visor away from oblivion, Dawson deftly captures Jazz´s first-person perspective – all while delivering sarcastic Weir-ian one-liners and cracking wise in the face of death. And with a cast of diverse characters from all walks of life calling Artemis home, Dawson tonally somersaults to voice Kenyan prime ministers, Ukrainian scientists, and Saudi welders. It´s a performance that transports listeners right alongside Jazz, matching her step for step on every lunar inch of her pulse-pounding journey. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Rosario Dawson.
