No doubt some of you are on a quest for profound insights into the nature of the cosmic forces that shape our world. Others are looking for that special quote to spice up their next lecture or keynote speech. But let's face it. Most of you are simply on the prowl for a wisecrack that will make them shine at tonight's dinner party. No need to be ashamed.Claus Grupen has been there himself, and back again. A native of Northern Germany and sometime resident of places as far apart in location and lifestyle as the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Japan, he is a noted scientist, an accomplished draughtsman, a loving husband, a long-suffering father of two, an avid lover of wine and jazz, a celebrated composer of chess problems, and the most senior advisor to his home town's fire brigade. Who could dream up an occasion this guy wasn't born ready for?Spanning three millennia, his collection of quotes from the fields of physics, philosophy, and psychology is a treasure trove of learning, erudition, and humor. Eclectic and subjective as it may be, you can be sure it holds something for all us sinners. Readers will have a hard time putting it down, and when they do, it will leave them amused, enriched, and inspired. May many of you take guidance from the words of the great George Berkeley: "What is mind? No matter. What is matter? Never mind.”
The square of opposition is a simple geometrical figure expressing some fundamental ideas about cognition. It is based on Aristotle's philosophy and has been fascinating people for two thousand years. The three notions of opposition presented in the square can be applied to analyze and understand such diverse subjects as reasoning about mathematical objects, perceptions of reality, speech acts, moral reasoning and reasoning about possibility. This book presents recent research papers dealing with the history and philosophy of the square, new diagrammatic and mathematical developments arising from it, and its applications to the fields of linguistics, psychology and argumentation. It also includes a DVD composed of events from the first world congress on the square of opposition held in June 2007 in Montreux, featuring some of the speeches and presentations of the participants, like the professors Pascal Engel, Laurence Horn, Terence Parsons, Jan Wolenski. Further, the DVD contains extracts of a square jazz show which was composed and presented for this occasion and extracts of the movie "The Square of Salomé". The movie, which was produced for this event, is a remake of the famous biblical story using the square to display the relations between the main characters.
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Laughing Stock was Talk Talk's fifth and final studio album. Released in 1991, it was the only album the band released on the jazz-based Verve Records, after acrimoniously leaving EMI. Like its predecessor, Spirit of Eden, the album featured improvised instrumentation from a large ensemble of musicians, including as many as seven violists on occasion. The recording sessions have attained near-mythical status among underground music fans, Tape Op magazine ran an extensive article detailing the demanding recording sessions, marked by Mark Hollis' perfectionist tendencies, and his use of candles and incense to set the mood. Original bassist Paul Webb had left the band prior to recording.Reviews of the album were generally good, many tended to emphasise the fact that it spanned several genres, with some noting a stylistic kinship with Miles Davis' contemplative In a Silent Way album. Like Spirit of Eden, the lyrical themes are often religious.
The first and foremost objective of this research is to study the reason big band is not popular in the music scene in Kuala Lumpur. It is very common to randomly pick one music student and have him name one popular song or a western classical piece but it is almost a rare occasion to have a music student - who is not involved in a big band - name a big band repertoire. Discovering the reasons of unpopularity will then lead to the discovery of the causes of its fluctuating appearance as said by Jeep during fieldwork. Besides the study on reasons of unpopularity, this research is done to serve as an extra knowledge in jazz and specifically big band and more importantly its development here in Malaysia. The information the researcher has gathered in this dissertation is hoped to be a useful guide and source of reading material in the future for fellow Malaysian music students, musicians, or anyone who is interested to learn about big band and its development in Malaysia. Co-Writers: Dr. Bo-Kyung Kim, Dr. Loo Fung Ying.

Blue Note Records is a jazz record label, established in 1939 by Alfred Lion and Max Margulis. Francis Wolff became involved shortly afterwards. It derives its name from the characteristic "blue notes" of jazz and the blues. Blue Note Records is currently owned by the EMI Group and in 2006 was expanded to fill the role of an umbrella label group bringing together a wide variety of EMI-owned labels and imprints specializing in the growing market segment of music for adults (see History-Resurrection, below). Historically, Blue Note has principally been associated with the "hard bop" style of jazz (mixing bebop with other forms of music including soul, blues, rhythm and blues and gospel). Horace Silver, Jimmy Smith, Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, Art Blakey, Lou Donaldson, Donald Byrd and Grant Green were among the label's leading artists, but almost all the important musicians in postwar jazz recorded for Blue Note on occasion, albeit most often only once.
