Jazz ´BonesThe World of Jazz TromboneThis book is a masterpiece! Kurt Dietrich has already established his reputation as an authority on jazz with his excellent book on the trombonists of the Duke Ellington orchestra, Duke´s ´Bones, Ellington´s Great Trombonists. His work in this wonderful collection of history, anecdotes, and stories is extremely well researched and documented. He traces the history of jazz trombone from its early inception through the big band era, bebop, new music, european, world music, up to the present. One of the strengths of this book is his inclusion of many lesser-know trombonists - some of whom were monsters albeit overlooked. Although a serious document, jazz ´bones is very enjoyable reading.Jazz ´bones will certainly take its place alongside the best volumes on music history and is without question required reading for all trombonists and lovers of jazz. Bravo, Kurt Dietrich! (Jiggs Whigham)Nombre de pages :612

Should I?This piece originated from my days in Boston in the mid 1980s as a graduate student and as part of the New England Conservatory Honors Jazz Ensemble, which performed music from across many wide ranging styles. Good interaction amongst the rhythm section is crucial. If you have a guitarist or electric keyboard/s in the rhythm section, feel free to incorporate a range of electronic effects in order to change textures. Changes in dynamics within the rhythm section is of prime importance. Think of music from the Miles Davis groups and albums of the late 1960s and early 70s such as In a Silent Way, Bitches Brew, and On the Corner. This Jazz-Rock piece has plenty of room to stretch out over the two key centers of A7 (alt) and Eb minor. The melody should be played with a straight eighth-note feel with attention to the accented (>) and capped (^) notes at Letters A and C. Watch the change in dynamics starting one beat before Letter D until the end of the form. At Letters B, F, F1 (the bridge of the form), the rhythm section shifts to a 12/8 African feel. The interlude at Letter I happens only at the end of each solo form. Note - The solo/ensemble interlude at Letter E1 follows a 16, 10 (8+2), 16 bar form which is different than the solo form at E-H. The interlude at Letter E1 was written to assist soloists with material to play or draw from during solos. Should I? can be heard on Beauty and the Blues (MMC2045J) with jazz greats Billy Hart, Rufus Reid and Tom McKinley.Nombre de pages :44

The Lobster Theory is a groundbreaking new approach to learning the language of jazz. It’s a book of musical concepts brought to life through the use of clever analogies, illustrated by New Yorker Magazine cartoonist Mick Stevens. Foreword by Jeff Coffin.Through eighteen chapters, this educational book shares fresh, creative approaches to the following topics:• Practicing (Lifting Weights)• Ear training (The School Bell) • Harmonic awareness (Ketchup on a Brownie)• Phrasing like a pro (The Bus)• The importance of chord study (Polishing the Silver)• Common tones (Dual Citizen Notes)• Keeping your solos fresh and spontaneous (The Lobster Theory)• Hearing in harmonic context (Harmonic GPS)• Pacing your solo (The Waiter)• How to memorize major scales & key signatures (Alligators, Elephants & Clowns)• Using chord substitutions (Harmonic Turn Signals)• Infusing your notes with life and energy (The Bobber Theory)• Using taste to differentiate the sounds of chords (Apple Chords - includes spellings for the 60 most common seventh chords)• Two great ways to sequence a musical idea (The Snake)• Connecting with your listener (Tasting Harmony)• Organizing your musical furnishings (The Music House)• Scale note selection (The Kid and the Cupcake)• Transformative practice strategies (Running with the Pro Dogs)Notated musical examples, jazz etude excerpts, educational chord graphs and charts are featured throughout the book to further illustrate and teach the musical concepts. What Greg Fishman has accomplished in this book is to explain, and then show – through the use of awesome drawings and complete musical examples – different concepts and ideas that are essential to our development as musicians. The Lobster Theory is a really fun read and I enjoy Greg’s sense of humor and wit. The ideas he presents here are effective, long lasting and inviting for students and educators alike. – Jeff Coffin

Learn how to solo like the masters! The ultimate practice book for serious jazz guitarists! The Cellular Approach is a practical method for developing the ability to create convincing jazz solos in a wide variety of playing situations. It takes actual jazz lines recorded by master players and then slices them up into small cells that can be re-combined into longer lines to fit almost any harmonic situation. This enables the player to improvise his or her own lines that sound just as interesting and melodic as the masters without resorting to simply copying others. Fingerings and string choices are often given too, making it particularly valuable to guitarists who want to actually master their instrument. Some of the harmonic situations dealt with include: Fast-moving cycles such as the bridge of Jordu Chromatic II-V changes Turnarounds, including many that are useful for dealing with rhythm changes Jimmy Heath´s C.T.A. changes John Coltrane´s Giant Steps changes. In addition, slower moving II-Vs are covered, using various strategies for stringing together the short cells into long flowing lines. 189 pages, $30 list price. There is a complete discussion of how to break out of diatonic-derived lines by using the cellular approach to create side-slipping and other intervallic lines — creating ultra-hip solo phrases in the style of modern masters such as Pat Metheny, Michael Brecker and Herbie Hancock. Finally, the cell concept gets transcended as twelve tone rows in the style of Mike Stern and others are explored, as well as lines derived from 23rd chords — for the adventurous that are interested in paving a way into the future.Randy Vincent is a master player and teacher. The information in this book is very thorough and complete and the insights he offers are invaluable to anyone who is interested in improvising. This is a most welcome addition to the world of jazz pedagogy. Thanks, Randy!!!”— Bruce FormanThis book is good for ALL instruments.
