The real star turn here is the live album recorded by the band called the ´Jazz Couriers´ in February 1958. Billed as the support act to Dave Brubeck, this band, co-led by the twin tenor saxophones of Hayes and Ronnie Scott, stole the show. Listen to the phenomenal ´Guy and Dolls´ for proof. The rest of this double CD comes pretty close, especially Hayes´s own quartet album, Tubby´s Groove, four tracks with a band led by trumpeter Jimmy Deuchar, and one featuring the young Stan Tracey. In the current revival of interest in British jazz of this period, and Hayes in particular, this release stands out.
