As long as she can remember, Jazz has always been her daddy's little princess. As she grows up on a beautiful Caribbean island, she is happy in his company and he is happy in hers. But when he becomes the victim of a deadly accident, Jazz and her mother drift apart emotionally, eventually sending Jazz disappearing into the night without a trace. As she attempts to forge a new life for herself, Jazz struggles against loneliness and feelings of abandonment; still, with a combination of good luck, instinct, and talent, she manages to survive-until she is betrayed by a trusted companion. Ten years later, in a fit of anger and despair, she returns home to those she deserted and discovers that Jason, her childhood sweetheart, is about to be married. Jazz wants him back-not only because she loves him, but because he can provide her with something she has always wanted: a big family. Jazz is prepared to give up everything-including the comfortable life she has created for herself-for love, but she soon discovers that her journey to happiness is more complicated than she ever imagined.

Gypsy Jazz

Of all the styles of jazz to emerge in the twentieth century, none is more passionate, more exhilaratingly up-tempo, or more steeped in an outsider tradition than Gypsy Jazz. And there is no one more qualified to write about Gypsy Jazz than Michael Dregni, author of the acclaimed biography, Django. A vagabond music, Gypsy Jazz is played today in French Gypsy bars, Romany encampments, on religious pilgrimages--and increasingly on the world's greatest concert stages. Yet its story has never been told, in part because much of its history is undocumented, either in written form or often even in recorded music. Beginning with Django Reinhardt, whose dazzling Gypsy Jazz became the toast of 1930s Paris in the heady days of Josephine Baker, Picasso, and Hemingway, Dregni follows the music as it courses through caravans on the edge of Paris, where today's young French Gypsies learn Gypsy Jazz as a rite of passage, along the Gypsy pilgrimage route to Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer where the Romany play around their campfires, and finally to the new era of international Gypsy stars such as Bireli Lagrene, Boulou Ferre, Dorado Schmitt, and Django's own grandchildren, David Reinhardt and Dallas Baumgartner. Interspersed with Dregni's vivid narrative are the words of the musicians themselves, many of whom have never been interviewed for the American press before, as they describe what the music means to them. Gypsy Jazz also includes a chapter devoted entirely to American Gypsy musicians who remain largely unknown outside their hidden community. Blending travelogue, detective story, and personal narrative, Gypsy Jazz is music history at its best, capturing the history and culture of this elusive music--and the soul that makes it swing.

Gypsy Jazz Guitar

Gypsy Jazz (sometimes known as Jazz-Manouche) is the first unique style of jazz music originating from Europe. It has influences that stem from; Hungarian Czardas; French musette waltzes; Spanish flamenco; and, of course, the music of the Sinti. It was originally played exclusively by Sinti musicians in a swing style. Django Reinhardt, the most renowned player of Gypsy Jazz, made it popular throughout the world with his ground-breaking techniques. To this day countless guitarists are influenced by the music and personality of Django Reinhardt. In Sinti culture, the techniques of playing Gypsy Jazz are traditionally passed down orally from generation to generation without ever being written down. It is because of this that musicians who are not Sinti often misunderstand the essence of this distinctly intriguing and fascinating music. The need for an authentic, written introduction to Gypsy Jazz guitar inspired Bertino Rodmann, a performing Gypsy Jazz guitarist from Frankfurt, Germany, to create this written method for Gypsy Jazz Guitar. Using the best examples of all the best performances, past and present, as well as showcasing the typical aspects of rhythm and lead guitar in Gypsy Jazz, his book aims to develop the reader’s respect for the ancient traditions of the Sinti and their music and bring this to a wider culture.

Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane at C...

In early 2005, an engineer at the Library of Congress accidentally discovered, in an unmarked box, the recording of Thelonious Monk's and John Coltrane's performance at a 1957 benefit concert at Carnegie Hall. Long considered one of the most important musical meetings in modern jazz, Monk's and Coltrane's work together during a scant few months in 1957 had, until this discovery, been thought to be almost entirely undocumented. In this book, Gabriel Solis provides an historical, cultural, and analytical study of this landmark recording, which was released by Blue Note records later in 2005. Taking a wide-ranging approach to the recording, Solis addresses issues of 'liveness,' jazz teaching and learning, enculturation, and historiography. Because nearly a half century passed between when the recording was made and its public release, it is a particularly interesting lens through which to view jazz both as a historical tradition and as a contemporary cultural form. Most importantly Solis accounts for the music itself. Offering in depth analytical discussions of each composition, as well as Monk's and Coltrane's improvisational performances he provides insight into Monk's impact on Coltrane as he developed his signature 'sheets of sound' style, as well as into the influence of a strong side-man, like Coltrane, on Monk at his creative and professional peak. The first study of one of the most significant jazz releases of the twenty-first century, Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall is essential reading for all jazz scholars, students, musicians, and fans.
