It was recorded in January 1972 and features performances by Tyner with Sonny Fortune, Calvin Hill, and Alphonse Mouzon. The Allmusic review by Brian Olewnick states "Tyner would go on to create several fine albums in the mid-'70s, but never again would he scale quite these heights. Sahara is an astonishingly good record and belongs in every jazz fan's collection". The album is considered Tyner's commercial breakthrough. It sold over 100,000 copies and was nominated for a Grammy. It is also often considered Tyner's best album.

John Rhea "Yank" Lawson (born May 3, 1911, Trenton, Missouri - died February 18, 1995, Indianapolis, Indiana) was a jazz trumpeter known for Dixieland and swing music. From 1933 to 1935 he worked in Ben Pollack''s orchestra and after that became a founding member of the Bob Crosby Orchestra. He later worked with Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey, but also worked with Crosby again in 1941. Later in the 1940s he became a studio musician leading his own Dixieland sessions. In the 1950s he and Bob Haggart created the Lawson-Haggart band and they worked together in 1968 to form the World''s Greatest Jazz Band, a Dixieland group which performed for the next ten years. He remained an important figure in Dixieland music until his death in 1995, aged 83. He was posthumously inducted into the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame in 1998.

It was re-issued in 1999 as When I Found You by Hindsight Records with 2 additional Rich Big Band instrumental tracks from the same era. Though they had been friends for a long time, Tormé and Rich had not recorded together until this album.Melvin Howard Tormé (September 13, 1925 June 5, 1999), nicknamed The Velvet Fog, was an American musician, known for his jazz singing. He was also a jazz composer and arranger, a drummer, an actor in radio, film, and television, and the author of five books. He co-wrote the classic holiday song "The Christmas Song" (also known as "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire") with Bob Wells.
