THE STORY OF ACID JAZZ The underground London club scene of the mild 1980's was dominated by the sound of 'rare groove', a DJ term created to describe hard to find jazz-funk music from the '70s. However by the Summer of 1988 a new sound began to infiltrate the clubs in the form of tripped-out Aci...

I Am Jazz The story of a transgender child based on the real-life experience of Jazz Jennings, who has become a spokesperson for transkids everywhere “This is an essential tool for parents and teachers to share with children whether those kids identify as trans or not. I wish I had had a book like this when I was a kid struggling with gender identity questions. I found it deeply moving in its simplicity and honesty.”—Laverne Cox (who plays Sophia in “Orange Is the New Black”) From the time she was two years old, Jazz knew that she had a girl’s brain in a boy’s body. She loved pink and dressing up as a mermaid and didn’t feel like herself in boys’ clothing. This confused her family, until they took her to a doctor who said that Jazz was transgender and that she was born that way. Jazz’s story is based on her real-life experience and she tells it in a simple, clear way that will be appreciated by picture book readers, their parents, and teachers. About Jazz Jennings, Jessica Herthel Jessica Herthel is the director of the Stonewall National Education Project, which networks LGBTQ inclusive school districts and develops educational…

A feel-good story of an unconventional friendship between an old retired jazz musician and a young girl who is trying to find her place in the world. What can a bullied teenager learn from an old man spending his days in a retirement home? For a start, she'll learn that it ain't got a thing, if it ain't got that swing...Passing by a retirement home on her way from yet another awful day at school, she hears a familiar song playing through an open window. An old man is playing her musical idol Povel Ramel - a quirky jazz musician from the 1940s - and it sparks a new stage of her life. The man's name is Alvar and just like Steffi, he has a huge interest in music. Before long he starts telling her his story. In his youth, as the Second World War tore across Europe, he travelled to Stockholm. Young, innocent and quite naive, Alvar began his life in the big city, struggling to become a famous jazz musician. Or at least someone who was in a band. Or at the very least someone who could dance the jitterbug and talk to girls.Intrigued and inspired by Alvar's story, Steffi spends more and more time at the retirement home, learning about jazz and forgetting about school. She begins to realize that she doesn't have to be the Steffi other people know, instead, as Alvar did, she can recreate herself through music.

Chronicle of a Phantom

Julius Watkins was the first prominent jazz French horn player in the history of American music. Although his performance capabilities were comparable to those of other significant performers of traditional horn repertoire, Watkins has received little attention posthumously from music scholars, jazz artists, and other performers of his instrument. The purpose of this book is threefold: to document Julius' complete life story for the first time in biographical form, to determine his performance characteristics within chamber jazz ensembles of various instrumental combinations, and to explore the development of the jazz French horn genre from 1977 to the present day. In writing this book, it is my goal to create not only awareness for this style of French horn playing, but to educate other musicians and potential audience members internationally on the subject of Julius Watkins, his professional accomplishments and performance style, and of this rare artistic form.
