Introducing Jazz to High School Ensembles

ggf. zzgl. Versand

This book is aimed at producing a jazz teaching model for the short- term training of students with little or no jazz experience. By using a mainly experiential approach over a set time frame and limiting the instruction to certain elements of jazz interpretation, it aims to present a reasonable introduction to small jazz ensemble performance in the high school sector. The research grows out of more than two decades experience introducing jazz performance to secondary school students where a well-defined pedagogical problem has been identified as a result of the lack of instructional methods for teachers wishing to instruct high school students in small jazz ensemble performance. The tuition model aims to fulfill certain quantifiable criteria over a set period of time. The efficacy of the model is assessed by the success of attaining basic parameters and qualified by the performance outcome at the end of the model implementation period.

Jazz Drumming

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Jazz drumming is the art of playing percussion (predominantly the drum set, which includes a variety of drums and cymbals) in jazz styles ranging from 1910s-style Dixieland jazz to 1970s-era jazz- rock fusion and 1980s-era latin jazz. The techniques and instrumentation of this type of performance have evolved over several periods, influenced by jazz at large and the individual drummers within it. Stylistically, this aspect of performance was shaped by its starting place, New Orleans, as well as numerous other regions of the world, including other parts of the United States, the Caribbean, and Africa. Jazz required a method of playing percussion different from traditional European styles, one that was easily adaptable to the different rhythms of the new genre, fostering the creation of jazz drumming's hybrid technique. As each period in the evolution of jazz swing and bebop, for example tended to have its own rhythmic style, jazz drumming continued to evolve along with the music through the 20th century.

George Garzone and Improvisation
70,00 € *
ggf. zzgl. Versand

Boston saxophonist George Garzone set out to become a professional jazz musician in the early 1970s. As his sound matured through experimentation with standard repertoire and free jazz, Garzone discovered an original process for creative improvisation. This book traces Garzone's career development and uncovers his original Triadic Chromatic Approach to improvisation. Author Dr. Jonathan Lorentz shares transcriptions of three of Garzone's improvised solos on jazz standard repertoire, reveals their melodic and harmonic content, and further demonstrates how Garzone applies these concepts in an improvisational context. Dr. Lorentz also explores how Garzone's performance and teaching methods inter-relate, and includes transcripts from personal interviews. The author shows that Garzone has made equally significant contributions to jazz through performance and teaching, and like many others of his generation, favors a open-ended understanding of jazz, one that Dr. Lorentz has deemed: Jazz-as-Process.
